May as well get one going here. This will be my universal blog post here on OWN. To anyone who doesn't know, I'm presently in my 2nd year at NYU, majoring in Journalism, so I'm big on blogging. I've got a few across the net. Some are more "PC" then others. Depends on my mood. But anywayz, enough of the chatter.
WHAT PISSES PUNCH OFF ON February 27th, 2009?
People bitching about the new Stimulus package. Now for all of you folks not living in the US of A, what this is...is a MASSIVE economic bill passed into law just last week by PRESIDENT Barrack Obama to help ease Americas financial woes. Here's the basic rundown of what it entails:
The Total: $789.5 billion
The Plan: Money will be used to not only boost or start much needed projects across the board in all 50 states, but also to help big and small businesses cope with the financial rear-naked choke America is presently locked in. It will also be used to give a "Stimulus Check" to every American who files their 2008 Taxes who make UNDER 36K a year. Which means every average working stiff in the US will get free money on top of their Federal and State Tax Returns.
So why the hell are their critics, congressmen and analyst crying foul? Because they believe the cash shouldn't be so freely handed out to any major company or city that claims to need it. There needs to be some liable proof that said parties need the aid. This doesn't pertain to the Tax Payers, more to State and Local governments and Businesses. I use my home state of NY for example. It is projected that in the next four years, NY State's Deficit is going to be roughly 47 BILLION Dollars. That's #7 in the nation behind Cali, New Jersey, Nevada, Rhode Island, Arizona & Delaware. These states are guaranteed to see cash from this, and that's on a federal level. Hell, New Jersey is on the cusp of having Federal Employees take a MANDATORY week off WITHOUT pay to alleviate it's woes, and let's not even go into the mess California is in. Bottom line, America...the biggest Financial power in the world, is limping. And when America's limping, the rest of the world feels it as well.
So what's the story BEHIND the story? Why are so many seeming to be critical of the plan? Because it doesn't cover "special interest" that's why. That's what the Bush Administration was all about. Remember those Tax breaks Bush granted to people making over 96K a year? Come next week they'll be loooooooooooooooong gone. What it seems to me is that the people with the cash are all upset because the new Prez is taking from out of there cookie jars are giving the REST of us some Gourmet Oatmeal Chocolate Chip, whereas Bush was content giving us those cheap 99 cent Oero knockoffs that get soggy in milk to fast. (You know the kind.) And it's angering them. And what's more? they can't do a damn thing about it. I for one not only support it, but I applaud it. President Obama has done more to try and ease economic woes in the US in his 1st month in office then Bush did ALL of 2008. But as the Prez said today in a press conference "We've still got tough choice ahead to make." Which couldn't be more true. His plan will not fix things in the long run. Hell, it might not even fix things in the short term, but it's a step in the right direction. When he ran for office, he said he was going to set forth a change in this country, and he's doing so. Problem is not many people like change. They're content with living as they have as long as the bad stuff doesn't hit their doorsteps. Well now everyone is going to be held accountable, and that's the way it should be.
So closing up, to Big Business, the money makers and so on...it's a pretty simple statement. The 8 year freeride you had with G Dubya was in office is officially over. And the money you were getting is now going where it needs to go, and should have went to in the 1st place, the American People. It sucks that such companies like Chrysler will most likely have to lay off something along the lines of 30,000 workers between now and 2010, but had they actually been doing something to fix their shit the last 8 years and not mooching off the government, they wouldn't be in this situation. Like I said, under the Obama administration everyone is held accountable. And it's going to be rough sailing at 1st. But what journey ever started off easy?
That's what PISSES me off today.
