ScarJo & Mickey Rourke Help Raise Iron Curtain
E! Online, Thu Mar 12, 2009
Scarlett Johansson is joining the superhero set. Her rep confirms that the actress has signed on to play Black Widow in the Iron Man sequel opposite Robert Downey Jr. The deal was signed this afternoon. "Scarlett is thrilled to be a part of Iron Man," her rep, Marcel Pariseau, tells me.
Meanwhile, after months of negotiations...
The Wrestler's comeback kid, Mickey Rourke, has finally sealed a deal to play villain Whiplash, according to Variety. Rourke's team had reportedly held out for more money after Marvel's initial offer was just $250,000.
Scheduled for a May 2010 release, part two of the franchise will also include Gwyneth Paltrow returning as Pepper Potts, along with Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury and Don Cheadle playing Col. James "Rhodey" Rhodes.

Sony and Marvel Announce New Release Dates for Thor, Spider-Man 4
Sony and Marvel Entertainment Inc. today announced an updated release schedule that will introduce and bring back multiple superheroes to the big screen in advance of the release of The Avengers, the much anticipated adaptation of Stan Lee’s ensemble comic. In reporting the news Coming Soon notes that this is the first time individual super heroes and their story arcs will be introduced separately and brought together in the same movie.
For Marvel’s self-produced projects several dates have changed. The new schedule keeps Iron Man 2 slated for May 7, 2010, moves Kenneth Branagh’s Thor from July 16, 2010 to June 17, 2011, drops The First Avenger: Captain America from May 6, 2011 to July 22, 2011 and pushes The Avengers from July 15, 2011 to May 4, 2012.
The renewed cinematic superhero craze that began with the 2000 release of X-Men shows no sign of abating, so this enormous, expensive gamble should pay off. It will certainly to do so for Samuel L. Jackson, signed to play Nick Fury in all four movies (and five others).
The studios have also confirmed the release of Spider-Man 4 on May 6, 2011, which will be directed by Sam Raimi, who is currently gearing up to promote Drag Me to Hell, his return to horror.

Stone Cold Prepares to Open a Can in ‘The Expendables’:
Former WWE wrestler Stone Cold Steve Austin is just the most recent in a line of notable names to join Sylvester Stallone’s upcoming action flick, The Expendables. Also joining is the aptly named Charisma Carpenter, according to Variety. Steve Austin was a star in 2007’s The Condemned and a superstar to the world of professional wrestling. He’ll be joining a superstar from theatrical wrestling world, Mickey Rourke, and a star from the actual-fighting world, Randy Couture, in the film.
Writer/director/star Sly Stallone just keeps grabbing great names from the world of action. His cast already includes Dolph Lundgren, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Danny Trejo, Forest Whitaker, and an alleged cameo by Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Carpenter was one of the stars of the WB’s “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and its spin-off series “Angel” and even had a sizable role on UPN’s “Veronica Mars.”
I’m impressed with how hard Stallone’s been working to get all of these notable names. None of them, with the exception of Rourke and Whitaker, have been confused for being phenomenal actors, yet in a story about mercenaries overthrowing a South American dictatorship it just all makes sense. We’ll have to see if The Expendables keeps generating more buzz or if a similar project (at least when it was first conceived), Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds, steals its thunder.
The Expendables begins filming later this month and is aiming for mid-2010 release.
